The Treatment of Paralysis of Thenar Muscles by Tendon Transfer (A Review of Multiple Tendon Transfers Used in the Past 30 Years)

Sakellarides HT, Orthopaedic/Hand Service, Boston University School of Medicine, 3 Hawthorne Place (S-102), Boston, MA, USA

This paper is a historical review of the multiple tendon transfers for paralysis of the thenar muscles of the thumb. A review of 125 cases were treated by the author from 1957 to 1999. The majority of cases had tendon transfer, namely, Bunnel, Royle-Thompson and Reardon. Modification of pulley will be described and the end results of each procedure will be discussed. The different pitfalls for the procedures will be evaluated. Among the 125 patients, 95 were males and 30 females; the ages ranged from 20 to 70 years. Follow-up was from 2 to 25 years. The results will be outlined.
