Breast Reconstruction with Diep-Flap after Segmental Resection at Breast Cancer

Liss AG, Acosta R, and Kildal M. Dept of Plastic Surgery, University of Uppsala, Akademiska Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden

Aim: Segmental resection of the breast at breast cancer has grown popular among general surgeons. The reason has been that the cosmetic results is argued better than mastectomy and in selected cases the prognosis is the same. However, patients are refeered not only with asymmetries in the size of the breasts but also and more difficult to correct is the dislocation of the nipple/areola in the direction of the resectionscar.

Method: The DIEP flap has become the standard method for reconstruction of mastectomies at our clinic. 9 cases are presented using the DIEP flap to reconstruct the size and the dislocation of the nipple/areola.

Conclusion: The DIEP flap is safe and very useful in reconstruction of small defects as in segmental resections of the breast in breast cancer. The cosmetic result is very good and since there is an areola/nipple there is usually no neeed for a second operation.
